Soleto, located in the earth of the Salento at the same distance from the Adriatic and Ionian sea, is one the centres of the Greek presence in the Salento area and a town of Messapian origin. It is one the most important neolithic sites in Salento thanks to many remains found in the area, now kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto.
The main construction of Soleto is the Church of the Assumption with its high bell-tower known as the Guglia di Raimondello built by Raimondo Orsini Del Balzo in 1397. This spire is 45 metres high and adorned with cornices made up of double rows of small arches.
Among other interesting churches the Church of Santo Stefano with its beautiful frescoes two layer thick.
